How to Play Baccarat

Baccarat has been played around the world for many years. In fact, it is one of the casino games with the most longevity. Many gamblers consider baccarat to be a game for “high rollers” however the game doesn’t require lots of money or even a high IQ. Baccarat is actually quite easy to play and the rules are pretty easy. In general, the game is like flipping a coin. Baccarat does have rules that govern how the game is played and players should learn the rules as quickly as possible to ensure they play the game as well as they can.

Playing

Baccarat tables are frequently located in the “high roller” area of the casino and may be roped off and separated from the other tables and games. Since the game looks like it is only reserved for high rollers baccarat has really gotten the reputation that it is only for the wealthy to play. Generally, the table minimums are quite high and the players wear formal clothing. To get a feeling for the size of a baccarat table just imagine a craps table because they are about the same size. Approximately 14 people may be accommodated at a baccarat table in addition to the three dealers that manage the table. Each player may make the choice of betting on the banker or on the player and this includes the player that is dealing. Most of the time the dealer will choose to bet on the banker; however this is not a rule.

The deal in baccarat rotates around the table to each player. Again, there is a similarity to craps because of the way the deal is passed around the table similar to the passing of the dice. Players that don’t want to deal do not have to and may choose to pass the deal to the next player. The banker will not change as long as the banker is winning. Two cards will be placed face down on the table by the dealer and then the cards will be handed back to the dealer after the player has looked at the cards. After this then the player/dealer will take the cards and show them face up on the table while the casino dealer announces the card totals. In certain situations an extra card may need to be dealt based on the total of the first cards. The winners of the hand will be identified and will receive their payouts while the losers will pay their bets. The player/dealer is not financially responsible to any of the other players and is only responsible for turning over the cards.

Baccarat Basics

In most types of baccarat there are eight decks of cards used. There is a point value assigned to each card. Cards 2-9 have their face value while face cards are 0 points and aces are 1 point. Each time a new shoe is introduced into the game the dealer will turn over the top card. The number on this card will determine the number of cards that must be burned from the deck by the dealer. For example, if the dealer turns over a face card or a 10 then this means that the top 10 cards will be “burned” or removed from the deck. The cut card is placed 16 cards into the bottom of the deck. The cut card is in place to signal the dealer when to end the game. One more hand will be played after the appearance of the cut card and then a new shoe will be introduced.

Getting Started

Once you feel comfortable with the basics of baccarat you will be ready to play. The game begins once the players have chosen who to place their bets on. The options include a tie, the banker, or the player. In certain situations there is an option to bet on a banker or player pair, although this is not common.

Once the players have placed their bets then there will be two cards dealt to the player and banker by the dealer. The score for the hand is obtained by looking at the total of the cards and then at the right digit. For example, if a hand is made up of a 6 and an 8 then the sum is 14 so the score of the hand is 4. There is no way to bust in baccarat and the score is always between 0 and 9.

In certain situations a third card may be dealt and there are rules that govern when the third card will be dealt, if at all. For example, a situation where a third card may be dealt is when a player has a score of 5 or lower. If the score is between 6 -9 then there is not an option for an additional card and he must stand. The overriding rule to this is if either player or banker has a score of 8 or 9 then a third card is not an option and both players stand. None of the other rules can replace this one and this is the most important one to keep in mind.

Should the banker have a score of 5 or lower and the player stands then he can take an additional card. If the players take an additional card based on his score then there are other rules that govern whether the banker is allowed to also take a card or stand.

Conclusion

The scoring system in baccarat always remains the same so once you know it you will have no problems. The worst hand a player can have in baccarat is a 0 and the best is a 9. That means those who play baccarat never really want to have a baccarat or hand of 0!
