House Committee Lifts Federal Ban on Online Poker
It looks like online gambling just got one step closer to being made legal. The House Committee recently voted to lift the federal ban which made internet-based poker illegal in 2002. This is after poker professional, Annie Duke spoke before the committee. Duke’s attempted to make a case for legalizing the sport stating before the House Committee “At its most basic level, the issue before this committee is personal freedom, the right of individual Americans to do what they want in the privacy of their homes without the intrusion of government.”
Well, it seems that her pleas, at least in part, worked. The House Committee agreed and not only voted to lift the ban but also approved taxing and regulating the game online. One Representative who objected to this legalizing online poker was Spencer Bachus, a Republican from Alabama. He stated that by legalizing the game, the government would be effectively, “opening casinos in every home and every bedroom and every dorm room, and on every iPhone, every BlackBerry, every laptop
