The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG) has decided to create a number of internet based gambling sites in an attempt to capture a portion of the monies spent by Ontarians on online gaming. Currently, hundreds of millions of dollars from the area goes to overseas gambling websites.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp is in charge of the province’s casinos and lotteries and wants to make internet-based gambling legal by the year 2012. As it stands, Ontarians cannot access internet gambling sites. The ones that do exist are based overseas and are neither licensed nor regulated.

Those who oppose online gambling cite the possibility that the number of individuals addicted to online gambling might increase because those already to susceptible to addictive behaviors may fall prey.  “By legitimizing online gambling on the Internet, it will make more people addicted to gambling and make the problem much worse,” said Frances Gelinas, a health critic.

Those in favor of online gambling have their own reasons for legalizing the practice. They cite the creations of more jobs and an increase in government revenues.
