Washington Based Gambling Website Shut Down
For now, online gambling is illegal in the United States. However, that hasn’t stopped some websites owners from giving it a go . One such owner had his site shut down after it was deemed illegal. The owner of Bethca.com thought that they could “game” the system.
At Bethca.com, players would get paid if they won, but not if they lost. It was for this reason that Nicholas Jenkins believed his site was free and clear. The Supreme Court of Washington thought otherwise.
The judges that ruled on the case determined that the fact that gamblers could opt out made no difference. The company accepted processing fees and also took a portion of all “the action.”Justice Tom Chambers wrote, “Under the statutory definition of bookmaking, it is immaterial whether or not Betcha users were engaged in gambling activity.”
Jenkins, for his part, was surprised at the ruling. He wrote on his blog how shocked he was and also expressed his belief that ruling was wrong and didn’t given an adequate amount of attention to the case.
