The History of Baccarat
Baccarat appeared in France during 1483-1498 during the rule of Charles VIII however it is believed that it originated in Italy and later made its way to France. Some historians believe baccarat has similar origins as Faro and Basset, which are other games. There are actually several different versions of baccarat and they are all recognized versions. These include baccarat banque, baccarat chemin de fer, and punto banco, which is American baccarat.
Baccarat is a game of chance, however in the banque and chemin de fer versions it involves some skill because players are able to make certain choices. Punto banco is simply a game of chance and there is no strategy that can improve a player’s chances.
Baccarat is a game that has limited betting options. They include player, banker, or tie. Those who are learning about baccarat should keep in mind that the “player” is not a specific player and the “banker” is not related to the house. These are just the players’ various betting options.
Scoring Baccarat Hands
As far as scoring goes baccarat cards are scored based on predetermined values. For example, cards 2-9 are scored based on their face value. So, a 2 has 2 points, a 9 nine points, and so on and so forth. All face cards and 10s are 0 points and aces have one point. In baccarat the final scores are determined by adding up the value of the two cards and then taking away the 10s digit. For example, a total of 15 would simply be a 5 and a 13 would be a 3. If the two cards together don’t add up to a two digit number then the number is the score. For example, a hand with a 4 and a 5 would be a 9 and no calculations are necessary. When a hand equals 0 it is called baccarat and is the lowest score. A baccarat hand might be a 4 and a 6 or another combination of cards that results in a 0 score. The highest score in baccarat is a 9 while the lowest score is a 0.
Newer Versions
A newer version of baccarat has become popular and it is known as mini baccarat. The focus of mini baccarat is to attract average players with average amounts of money to spend. The rules are the same as with American baccarat however the procedure is easier and the table limits are lower. The goal was to get average players to learn more about the game and want to play it. It seems to have worked because today baccarat is not considered to be a high roller game as much as it once was.
