The History of Blackjack

Like poker and other games, Blackjack was not just invented over night. In fact, it is said that Blackjack most likely has evolved from a similar game that was played in France during the 1700s. Most game historians believe that the game later came to the US with the first French colonists, and that it eventually just spread across the country.

When Nevada made gambling legal in 1931, the game of Blackjack was called “21″. However, to attract more 21-gamblers to their tables, some casinos offered a special bet which they called “Blackjack”. This Blackjack Bet paid ten times the money and could be won if the player got a hand that consisted of the Ace of Spades and either the Jack of Clubs or the Jack of Spades. Even though it was decades since casinos offered these kinds of extra payouts, the name Blackjack is still used today.
